Strengthen Your Body Before Surgery

Prehabilitation is important for preparing your body for the demands of surgery. By focusing on improving strength, flexibility and endurance in the weeks leading up to your procedure, you give yourself the best chance at a faster, smoother recovery.

Targeted exercises and guided support can help enhance physical resilience, reduce the risk of complications and help you return to daily activities with greater ease. These tailored prehabilitation exercises aim to help you physically and mentally prepare so you’re ready to face surgery and the road to recovery with greater confidence.

How Prehabilitation Services Work

The aim of prehabilitation is to help maintain or improve your mental and physical abilities before surgery to help avoid complications and for a smooth recovery. It works by connecting you with a multidisciplinary team of our doctors, physiotherapists, dieticians and social workers, depending on your needs, and prescribing structured exercise, nutrition or other programs to help prepare you for your surgery.

Often known as ‘prehab’, it’s a type of pre-surgery rehabilitation that focuses on preparation rather than recuperation. It’s a proactive program before surgery, optimising your current health to help achieve the best surgical outcomes and a range of potential benefits, like shorter hospital stays and a quicker return to your daily activities.

The Benefits of Prehabilitation Services

Engaging in prehabilitation before surgery in Sydney aims to improve your recovery and overall health. Some of the benefits include:

  • Faster recovery times, helping you get back to your daily routine more quickly.
  • Reduced risk of surgical complications from improved physical fitness.
  • Increased strength, flexibility and endurance to help support your body during and post-surgery.
  • Enhanced mental preparedness, reducing anxiety around surgery.
  • Improved long-term health outcomes and quality of life.

By investing your time in prehabilitation, you help give yourself the best chance for a smoother surgical experience and lasting well-being.

What to Expect in Our Classes

Designed and run by our dedicated team of trained professionals, MoveWell patients receive real-time supervision, oversight, and personalised care during every class.

Classes begin with a gentle warm-up to prepare your body, followed by targeted exercises that gradually build in intensity. Our team watches for signs of fatigue and discomfort, providing immediate adjustments when needed.

Each of our MoveWell exercise programs runs multiple times a week. All first-time participants are required to complete a medical clearance form and a one-on-one assessment before starting classes. This allows us to tailor your treatment to your specific circumstances.

Current class participants can also book a casual MoveWell session online to maintain their progression between face-to-face classes.

What to Expect from Our Prehabilitation Program

Your prehabilitation journey with Wolper Jewish Hospital starts with a comprehensive consultation. During this initial session, our team will review your medical history, assess your current physical condition and lifestyle, and discuss the nature of your upcoming surgery. This helps us to understand your individual needs and identify any areas that require special attention.

Based on this assessment, we design a personalised program tailored to you. This may include prehab exercise programs, dietary modifications, quit smoking plans and other individualised needs. We may also incorporate breathing exercises and balance training, depending on your surgery type and overall health.

Throughout the program, our specialists regularly monitor your progress using physical assessments and patient feedback. This allows us to adjust your exercises and intensity as needed to help your body be optimally prepared.
