Wolper’s MoveSteady Fall Prevention Exercises
Wolper’s MoveSteady Fall Prevention Exercises
Wolper MoveSteady is suitable for people who are independent or use a walking stick/frame. Classes held at Wolper Jewish Hospital only
The MoveSteady program was designed to improve balance, strength, coordination and flexibility, all of which are crucial in reducing the risk of falls—especially for older adults or those with certain health conditions.
Here’s how these exercises are customised:
- Balance Training: Exercises like standing on one leg, tandem walking, or using a balance board help improve postural control.
- Strength Training: Emphasizes leg muscles (quads, hamstrings, glutes, calves) using bodyweight, resistance bands, or light weights.
- Coordination Exercises: Activities like stepping patterns or dual-tasking (walking while talking) train the brain and body to work together.
- Flexibility and Mobility: Gentle stretching improves range of motion, making movement easier and more stable.
- Gait Training: May involve walking drills, proper foot placement, and using assistive devices safely if needed.
Our exercises often simulate daily tasks (such as reaching, stepping over objects, or turning), helping to build confidence in everyday situations.
The Benefits of Fall Prevention Exercise
Scientific research strongly supports the role of regular physical activity in preventing falls and reducing related injuries, especially among older adults.
Studies have shown that targeted exercise programs focusing on strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination can significantly decrease fall risk by improving muscle function and enhancing postural control.
Evidence from clinical trials indicates that consistently engaging in regular balance and strength training exercises can lower fall rates by up to 30%. Activities such as resistance training and functional movement routines help retrain the body to respond more effectively to loss of balance, reducing the chances of stumbling or falling.
Regular physical activity also contributes to better bone health and joint stability, which not only helps prevent falls but also minimises the severity of injuries, such as fractures, when falls do occur.
